Building ShillongOne in Khasi, Garo, and Hindi

We're publicly recruiting language reviewers — and explaining what's hard about doing this well.

From early next year, ShillongOne will be available in Khasi, Garo, and Hindi alongside English. We're publicly recruiting reviewers — paid, part-time — to make sure the translation is right.

What we're looking for, for each language: 3 reviewers with strong language fluency and an interest in civic infrastructure. No technical background needed.

What's hard:

  • Many of our terms — "grievance", "triage", "SLA", "corridor" — don't have clean translations. We will need to make decisions about whether to coin new terms or use loanwords. We want native speakers in the room when we make those decisions.
  • Some of our copy is procedural. "Your grievance is filed. The Department of Roads will respond within 7 working days." That has to be both faithful and natural — not a literal translation.
  • Maps don't translate, but their labels do. Khyndai Lad is Khyndai Lad. Police Bazaar is Police Bazaar. But "junction" might be different.
